Bacardi Cuba Libre

Bats and Other New Things…

Following hot on the heels of the Bacardi ‘Untameable’ launch (which I’m sure you can’t fail to have seen in one media format or another?) there are now five important changes being made to the portfolio of Bacardi rums currently available here in the UK. Couple this with further investment in consumer awareness I foresee that will surely benefit the category as a whole.  We consider each in turn and keep an eye out for a Release of Bats…

Talking Rum and Sugar with Alexandre Gabriel

Alexandre Gabriel, President and Master Blender of Plantation Rum

Sweet Talk

I’ve had the pleasure of attending a number of presentations given by Alexandre Gabriel (Master Blender of Plantation Rum) over the years; it’s wonderful to listen to someone whom is passionate about their craft and relishes the opportunity to speak about it.  It’s not an unusual situation to find Alexandre chatting away whilst the rest of the team are tapping their watches…

In the last six months or so, a thread of conversation has been bouncing around on the forums and social media channels about the addition of sugar to rum.  Views vary from the puritanical, modernistic*, militant ‘thou shalt not sweeten’ to the ‘sugar is part of the history and heritage of making rum’ to ‘hey I like my rum this way’ and if you’re planning on getting into a discussion on the subject then listening to all opinions is only polite.  I want to publish some of these and what better way to start than with some of Alexandre’s thoughts on the matter from a source I’ve been given permission to share here on TheFloatingRumShack.com.

A Three-Day Rum Festival with Ron Montero Launches on the Tropical Coast of Granada, Spain

Following along from forming an intrinsic and valuable part of the first Rum Experience University held last September 2013, local rum producers, Ron Montero are set to launch a 3 day festival dedicated to all things rum (or ron, depending upon the language you speak).  The festival aims to be an annual event commemorating what was once the end of the harvest season, and celebrating the history, culture, gastronomy and local rum cocktail traditions.  It takes place in Motril (Granada, Spain) during the 6, 7 and 8th of June.

Bacardí Legacy Global Cocktail Competition 2014 Preview

Bacardí Legacy Global Cocktail Competition

The World’s Best Bartenders Compete in Moscow to Create the Next Bacardí Legacy Cocktail…

…And the good news (for me is) that I’ll be along for the ride to see the action unfurling first hand as it were.  Yes Moscow beckons and it’s all pretty damn exciting.

27 of the best bartenders in the world all vying for the win: there is sure to be all manner of drama, pathos (probably), tears before bedtime (almost certainly) and a whole load of rum.

And if you listen carefully the cries of “Ochhoooooo!”* can clearly be heard across the social media streams as bartenders and brand ambassadors alike toast the moment with measures of Bacardi 8 Year Old rum.
