Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Jamaica Rum

The packaging of Appleton Estate 21 Year Old Jamaica Rum, something of a luxury offering in the world of Rum, has now been upgraded to include a metal canister (previously a cardboard tube) as part of the overall presentation.  I mention it now, as you may be stuck for ideas when it comes to ideas for Father’s Day presents and assuming your budget will allow, you could do much worse than can consider a bottle for your dear old Dad!

Richard Seale

Not So Sweet Talk…

Following along from the recent article featuring Alexandre Gabriel’s viewpoint, I’m pleased to share with you the thoughts of Richard Seale on the subject.  Be under no illusion that I flinched a little when I read this the first time.  If there is chastisement to be taken, I’ll take it.  My viewpoint hasn’t changed from the previous article on the matter although I might take a moment to point out how I see the world of rum – a view borne from the perspective of someone who doesn’t actually produce rum.
Ladies and gentlemen, let’s welcome Richard Seale to the mic:

Alexandre Gabriel, President and Master Blender of Plantation Rum

Sweet Talk

I’ve had the pleasure of attending a number of presentations given by Alexandre Gabriel (Master Blender of Plantation Rum) over the years; it’s wonderful to listen to someone whom is passionate about their craft and relishes the opportunity to speak about it.  It’s not an unusual situation to find Alexandre chatting away whilst the rest of the team are tapping their watches…
In the last six months or so, a thread of conversation has been bouncing around on the forums and social media channels about the addition of sugar to rum.  Views vary from the puritanical, modernistic*, militant ‘thou shalt not sweeten’ to the ‘sugar is part of the history and heritage of making rum’ to ‘hey I like my rum this way’ and if you’re planning on getting into a discussion on the subject then listening to all opinions is only polite.  I want to publish some of these and what better way to start than with some of Alexandre’s thoughts on the matter from a source I’ve been given permission to share here on

Following along from forming an intrinsic and valuable part of the first Rum Experience University held last September 2013, local rum producers, Ron Montero are set to launch a 3 day festival dedicated to all things rum (or ron, depending upon the language you speak).  The festival aims to be an annual event commemorating what was once the end of the harvest season, and celebrating the history, culture, gastronomy and local rum cocktail traditions.  It takes place in Motril (Granada, Spain) during the 6, 7 and 8th of June.
