Joy Spence

Two Masters… One Love!

I just had to share this press release from Gruppo Campari, as we here at TheFloatingRumShack have so much love, on so many levels for Joy Spence. We’ve had the pleasure of meeting her a number of times over the years and hope that there will be many more as the ambassador role that she fulfills really is inspiring. To help put her passion into context, I thought I’d share a brief story that arose from the last time I met her.

El Dorado Rare Collection Rum

El Dorado Rare Collection Rum

A Glimpse at The Future…

Given that 2016 is the 50th Anniversary of Guyana’s independence from the United Kingdom, you genuinely could expect this year to contain a few fairly exciting releases from DDL in celebration of the fact. Until now, if you wanted to taste a really old single still, single cask rum produced at Demerara Distillers Limited – your choices were limited somewhat. With the end of the Velier releases, the future looked ‘empty’, but now that the actual producer of the rum has come to realise that there is a lot of kudos to be gained through releasing their own rum, under their own label, I suspect that there will be more to come in future. Especially as these are so good.

Gn Chan Crowned Global Legacy Winner

Venceremos

Venceremos is the 2016 ‘Legacy’

I think it goes without saying that I’m pretty keen to try the winning cocktail from the recent Global Finals of Bacardi Legacy. Initially more than a little nonplussed about the “inspired by the Piña Colada” line, the subsequent feedback from our Cocktail Wonk buddy has now whetted my appetite sufficiently, though!

Leblon Road Trip To Rio

…The UK Leg!

Friday 13th may be unlucky for some, but today is the day on which the first of five stops on the UK leg of the Leblon ‘Road Trip To Rio’ tour (ultimately ending up in Rio in time for the Olympic Games) kicks off. It’s the perfect place to learn a little more about Leblon Cachaça and get to grips with the Caipirinha culture that the brand embraces. It will be easy to spot – the Caipivan (decorated in the lime green brand colour) will be leading the way!

El Dorado 15-Year-Old Special Cask Finishes

A New Direction…

Our friend Dean MacGregor, who is the UK Brand Ambassador for El Dorado rum recently asked Komal Samaroo, Chairman of DDL a few questions about the new Cask Finish range and then kindly shared both the questions and responses with us, so we could share with our readers. Some are a little brief, and I’m sure that a lot of people would like to dive in a little deeper, but it’s a great place to start for now.

New Look for Woods Navy Rum

Woods Navy Rum

“Our Bottles Changed. Our Rum Hasn’t”

A few weeks ago William Grant & Sons UK officially unveiled the new, ‘premium’ packaging of Wood’s Old Navy Rum. We’d got a sighter of the lovely upgrade to the packaging when we met with the new Woods Brand Ambassador, Stephen ‘Mr Rum’ Rutherford back in February. Secrecy and ‘all that’ meant we hide our gift bottle away to allow maximum impact on the release. Shame – I think it is a great improvement on what was (actually) quite an iconic package before. I say iconic – I don’t mean I particularly liked it…

Carta Switchel - Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition

Countdown To San Francisco!

If you follow the Bacardi Legacy Cocktail Competition, then the fact that Iain Griffiths was crowned as the UK champion a few weeks ago will not come as news to you, but I’ve held off posting the result because I wanted to try his serve properly and now that I have, I’ve got some thoughts I'd like to share.

Spirit Producers of Brazil are Planning a Miami Invasion

Miami Rum Renaissance

“Don't Call It Rum”

I have to admit to being more than just a little bit fascinated by the category of cachaça – varied, intensely flavoursome and nicely beyond the exclusive use of American Oak. In short – there’s a whole world of something new to sip if only you take a moment to indulge…
